Race, COVID-19 infections, and chronic disease contributed to higher COVID-related hospitalization rates for Black patients compared to white patients, according to new research from scientists at Louisiana State University (LSU) Health, New Orleans, School of Public Health published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. This is the first study to quantify the effect of chronic diseases on racial disparity in COVID-associated hospitalizations. (Soucheray, 9/13)

Today in Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology, findings from a 2021 survey of infection preventionists at 900 US hospitals suggest that strong hospital leadership support led to lower levels of COVID-19 pandemic鈥搑elated burnout鈥攁lthough half reported burnout鈥攁nd greater psychological safety. The American Society of Microbiology (AMS) today released consensus recommendations on gain-of-function research into infectious agents with pandemic potential. The recommendations include internationally accepted definitions of terminology, greater transparency with the public, and stronger biorisk-management systems and oversight. The recommendations were based on a workshop of top scientists who reviewed the benefits and risks of gain-of-function research of concern (GOFROC) in May 2023. (Van Beusekom, 9/13)
